At Hope City Church, our book of the month for May 2026 is Joel. What lessons can we learn from Joel about God’s ability to restore and fill us with His Spirit? Let’s find out…
Life can sometimes feel uncertain, overwhelming or even spiritually dry. There are seasons when we wonder if God still sees us, hears us or truly has good plans for us. The book of Joel offers an encouraging reminder that even after hardship, loss or struggle, God’s heart is always restoration and His promises are still being fulfilled today.
A Message of Hope After Difficult Seasons
Joel was written during a time of devastation. The land had been destroyed and people were facing loss. Yet through the prophet Joel, God gave His people hope.
“I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten…”
Joel 2:25 (ESV)
This verse is comforting because it shows that God is not only concerned with our present, but He is also able to redeem what feels lost in our past. Whether it’s lost time, broken dreams, missed opportunities or painful seasons, God’s restoration is greater than our setbacks.
God’s Promise Goes Beyond Restoration
God’s plan wasn’t just to restore crops or circumstances; it was to pour out His Spirit on all people.
“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions”
Joel 2:28 (ESV)
This verse is so powerful. God was declaring that His Spirit would not be limited to a select few, but available to everyone – young and old, men and women.
This promise became reality in the New Testament on the Day of Pentecost.
“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance”
Acts 2:4 (ESV)
When the Holy Spirit came, it was revolutionary. God’s presence became personal, powerful and available to every believer.
What Does This Mean for Us Today?
God’s promise in Joel is not just ancient history; it still matters. His Spirit brings:
- Strength when we feel weak
- Wisdom when we feel confused
- Comfort in difficult seasons
- Boldness to live out our faith
- Vision for the future
The same God who promised restoration and outpouring is still working today. No matter your background, your past mistakes or your current struggles, God desires to fill your life with His Spirit.
You Are Included
One of the most encouraging parts of Joel’s prophecy, is that it includes everyone. Sometimes we may feel disqualified from God’s promises because of our mistakes, fears or imperfections. But God’s Spirit is poured out on “all flesh.” Yes, that includes you.
Whether you are:
- A young person searching for purpose
- A senior person wondering if it’s too late
- A parent carrying heavy burdens
- A creative longing to make impact
- A person rebuilding after loss
- A believer praying for renewal
God’s Spirit is for you.
A Fresh Invitation
Today, Gods words recorded in Joel chapter 2 are still an invitation to hope, restoration and deeper relationship with God.
“And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved”
Joel 2:32 (ESV)
God’s promises are not outdated. His Spirit is still moving. Restoration is still possible with Him. God’s grace is still available each day.
So, if you’ve been feeling weary, stuck or spiritually dry, remember this:
God restores. God renews. God pours out His Spirit. And His promises are for YOU.
